Juvederm Treatment

What is Juvederm?

Juvederm filler is a gel type filler made of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in the body. Some Juvederm varieties are mixed with lidocaine in order to facilitate a comfortable application of the said filler. It is a non-invasive procedure used to enhance or smoothen the contour areas on the face that have experienced “hollowing”.

Juvederm treatments are also used to fill in facial wrinkles and folds and sometimes to bring fullness to lips. There are numerous other fillers on the market that are all variations of Juvederm and differ in their composition so that they are thicker or have varying durations in the body. Oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Amiya Prasad and the client will openly discuss cosmetic goals and which preparation of filler will best suit his or her needs.

How Does Juvederm Work?

Hyaluronic acid content in Juvederm is designed to bind and absorb water. Therefore, when the filler is injected into the mid to deep dermis, the underlying stubborn lines and wrinkles around the face are given more fullness and volume.

Juvederm treatment consists of small strategically-placed injections that help restore the natural volume of skin that has decreased with age from sun damage. Juvederm treatments take approximately 15 minutes to half an hour and give instantaneous results.

How Long Does a Juvederm Treatment Last?

Juvederm treatment results can last up to six months or longer. Dr. Amiya Prasad recommends follow-up Juvederm treatments every six months.

Juvederm Areas of Treatment

Juvederm may be used for the following facial problem areas:

  • Marionette lines near the mouth
  • Vertical lines on the upper lip
  • Corner lines of the mouth
  • Parentheses lines near the nose and cheek

Juvederm Post Treatment Care

After Juvederm treatment, patients must avoid strenuous exercise, extended exposure to the sun and consumption of alcoholic beverages, so as not to counteract or interfere with the effects of Juvederm on the skin.

Patients should expect slight tenderness, swelling or bruising in the injected areas. These are considered normal side effects and should disappear in about a week or less. Patients may use ice packs for a short period to address any swelling or bruising.
