Eyelid surgery – When Creams And Everything Else Just Doesn’t Work
You’ve tried creams, noninvasive treatments and maybe even injections to avoid surgery yet the results promised in the ads and infomercials just haven’t lived up to their promise. Thanks to the internet, more consumers are posting their opinions about these creams which promise results which are medically impossible. To better understand why surgery is probably the right choice for you, here are some facts about the area around the eyes which make eyelid surgery the right choice.
Hooded Eyes
Hooded eyes often make the eyes look tired and for many women difficult to apply makeup.
What are the common causes for hooded eyes?
- Heredity
Your hooded eyes may a trait that runs in your family. Extra skin and fatty tissue over the eyes is often a genetic trait which make the eyes look tired and makes it difficult to apply make up - Age
As we get older, the skin around the eyes tends to get thinner and folds over the upper eyelids. For many people, the eyebrows droop and the skin hangs over the eyes. Puffy fat pockets also develop which make the eyes look and feel heavy and tired. - Ethnic background
Asians and African Americans as well as Indians and people of Latin descent can have hooded eyelid appearance or “hooded lids”. The desire to create a natural crease in the eyelid or eyelid fold is common in the field of plastic surgery for the eyes. More Information About Asian Eyelid Surgery - Allergies
Swelling from allergies and rubbing your eyes and can cause the skin to become more elastic and wrinkled
over time resulting in eyes which look older than you are. - Sun exposure
Ultraviolet light in particular UVA light causes a process called “photoaging” which results in speeding up the aging process of the skin. Sun damaged skin is the result of a breakdown in collagen which is the supporting structure of the skin. - Smoking
Smoking deprives the skin of oxygen and generates harmful molecules called “free radicals”. Free radicals damage
blood vessels and the collagen that supports the skin.
Eyelid Surgery For Hooded Eyes
Cosmetic eyelid surgery is also called “blepharoplasty” (pronounced blef-aro-plasty). The term “blepharoplasty” comes from the Greek term “bleph” which means “eyelid” and “plastikos” which means “to change”.
It’s More than just skin- if you keep up with celebrities then you know that plastic surgery for the eyes is not as simple as it may appear. In fact several years ago, one of the most popular searches was for “Kenny Rogers eyes” or “Kenny Rogers plastic surgery disaster”. If you don’t know the story, essentially what happened was that singer Kenny Rogers had eyelid surgery which resulted in his having problems with dry eyes and required surgery to make his eyes smaller to keep them from getting too dry. Needless to say, many people did not like the way he looked.
What Causes Puffy Eyes or Under Eye Bags?
- Orbital Fat
Puffiness under the eyes, which remain visible despite sufficient sleep and/or appropriate allergy treatment, is due to orbital fat. Fat prolapses in the space that the eye sits, also known as the orbit. This prolapsed fat may be removed, sculpted and reduced through one of two methods. To improve the appearance of the bags beneath the eyes, the two most common approaches are transcutaneous (external) and transconjunctival (internal). Usually, bags have been approached by a majority of practitioners through the former external incision. In the external approach, an incision is made directly below the eyelashes to access the fat by lifting up the skin and going through the orbicularis oculi muscle to get to the fat pads. Depending on a person’s age and ethnicity, Dr. Prasad prefers the latter internal approach, also known as transconjunctival blepharoplasty, which removes under eye bags, leaves no outside scars, and preserves the natural shape of the eye.
Drooping Eyelids – What Are The Causes?
- Loose Skin
Generally, as we get older, the skin get’s thinner and more loose. In addition as the cheeks become more hollow and sag, the eyelid skin can appear to be loose and even hanging. - Lower Eyelid Support Which Becomes Weak
Lower eyelid support is complicated and underappreciated by many plastic surgeon. The lower eyelid support is a combination muscle (orbicularis oculi), tendon (lateral canthal tendon) and anatomy such as prominence (deep set or bulging) of the eyes. Arguably, a significant reason for hollow eyes, dry eyes, rounded under eyes and dissatisfaction after lower eyelid surgery is from plastic surgeons (yes, board certified plastic surgeons) not addressing correctly the weakening of lower eyelid support.
Many people are referred to Dr. Prasad as a Super-Specialist Oculofacial Cosmetic Surgeon due to their unrecognized problems with lower eyelid support. Properly supporting the lower eyelids requires several different specialized techniques, experience and finesse. In addition, the support structures of the eyelid can be shaped in a way that can create a more natural and brighter appearance to the eyes. - Wrinkled skin
Although eyelid surgery may improve some lines around the eyes caused by loose skin, the fine wrinkles in the skin may be addressed with procedures which are routinely performed at the same time such as fractional CO2 laser, Erbium laser, and Pelleve’.
