Eyelid Surgery Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost for eyelid lift surgery?

The cost of eye lift surgery depends on the extent of your surgery. The cost will vary depending on whether you are having surgery on your upper or lower lids alone or if you are having both operated on.

Getting surgery on both upper and lower lids simultaneously costs less than having them done separately, and at different times. Generally, eye lift surgery is also more expensive if it is done in a hospital, as compared to our Joint Commission-approved surgery facilities.

The extent of aging of the eyes, the quality of the skin, the patient’s healing abilities, the anatomy of the lids and the skull, the general habits of the patient in terms of sun exposure, diet, and exercise, and the underlying medical condition of the patient are just some of the major factors that must be considered when determining the time and cost of the procedure, and until you are properly examined by Dr. Prasad, it is virtually impossible to estimate the exact cost.

How painful is eyelid surgery?

Dr. Amiya Prasad strongly believes in minimizing pain as much as possible during and after surgery. Dr. Prasad usually gives his patients medication such as Valium before eyelid surgery so there is less anxiety. Dr. Prasad has also developed his own method of anesthesia called LITE™ Anesthesia, which involves receiving IV (intravenous) medications such as liquid valium to make you feel calm and comfortable. After surgery, most people are surprised by how little discomfort there is.

How long does eyelid surgery take?

Depending on the procedure, eye lift surgery can take two to three hours, including setup. Of course, every patient and case is different.

How to lift eyelids without surgery?

Dr. Amiya Prasad uses either a CO2 laser or radio frequency instruments. A universally acknowledged truth, however, is that while modern tools are crucial to the success of a procedure, the operator of the tool’s skill is of equal paramount importance.

How long after eyelid surgery can I wear contacts?

Contact lenses may be worn within a week after surgery.

When can I exercise after eyelid surgery?

After the first two days, you can do as much as you feel capable. Lifting and high-impact exercise should be avoided for two weeks. Low-impact exercises can be resumed in one week. Sexual activity can most likely be resumed in two weeks. Swimming may take a little longer, probably up to a month, and will require clearance from Dr. Prasad to ensure that your sutures are fully healed before you do it.

When can I take a shower after having eyelid surgery?

You can shower or wash your hair after eyelid surgery, just avoid getting water directly in your eyes. Getting the eyelid area wet is fine.

How long does bruising last after eyelid surgery?

In eye lift surgery, using LITE IV sedation and local anesthesia minimizes bruising and healing as compared to general anesthesia. Most bruising is minimal and should be healed after a week. Some people do get some lower lid “shiners” but they resolve within a week to two weeks as well. Our office offers Jane Iredale, a mineral-based, organic cover-up makeup, as well as medical grade skin care to help with the healing process.

Can I drive after eyelid surgery?

Since you will have ointment on your eyelids, you may have trouble with your vision, and therefore it is not advisable to drive home after eye lift surgery.

When can I return to work after eyelid surgery?

Most people go back to work in one week. However, if you have a job that involves a lot of physical activity, we may ask you to take a couple of extra days off. As for personal activities, we have had patients who have gone shopping in just two days after surgery.

What can I expect after eyelid surgery?

You will get a printed set of instructions from Dr. Prasad. You will be advised to apply a prescribed ointment and ice packs onto the eyelids for the first two days. We also recommend taking vitamin C. It is advisable that you have someone with you while you are at home. If you would like, our office can help to arrange a postoperative care home nurse for you for the first two days after surgery.

Can I watch TV after eye lift surgery?

Yes, there will be no strain on your eyes from watching TV after eye lift surgery.

What is Dr. Prasad’s training?

Dr. Amiya Prasad is a Cosmetic Oculofacial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon. He specializes in facial plastic and eye lift surgery. The eye is a very delicate and complex structure that requires the skills of a specialist who has had a significant amount of training and experience in the area. Many general plastic surgeons often have problems with the eye because of the limited experience they have in this area. Since Dr. Prasad is also an ophthalmologist, he will make sure your eyes are healthy and taken care of at the same time.
