Eyebrow surgery may be more important than you think! While we don’t usually think of eyebrows and lashes as vital parts of the face, missing or thinning eyebrows can take away from its expressiveness.
What is Eyebrow Transplant Surgery?
Eyebrow transplant surgery is a procedure that restores healthy, growing hair follicles to thinning, scarred or completely missing eyebrows. There are many reasons that people lose their eyebrows, ranging from genetics to psychiatric disorders such as excessive hair plucking.
Structures as unique as your eyebrows can be surgically replaced with the latest modern surgical techniques used in eyelash and eyebrow transplants. Today’s understanding of hair growth and re-growth allows for eyebrow transplant procedures to be performed on a regular basis.
Reasons for Getting an Eyebrow Transplant
When eyebrows have been eradicated from the effects of burns, physical injury or trauma, or repeated plucking.
Tattoos and body piercings have also contributed to the loss of eyebrows because of scarring or infection.
Hypothyroidism can cause the eyebrows to disappear.
People with congenital hair loss may also lose their eyebrows.
Eyebrow Transplant Surgery Procedure
The eyebrow transplant procedure begins with a combination of local anesthesia and mild sedation. A 1 by 3 centimeter strip of donor hair is then taken from the patient’s head. The area from which the strip was excised is then sutured closed.
Recipient sites are created on the eyebrow area with the use of a tiny needle or a micro blade that is less than 1 mm in width. The sites are cut in such a way that the hair will lie parallel to the natural direction of growth. The hairs are then transplanted into the recipient sites, and there is no bandage or dressing. It is fine work, with hairs being transplanted individually or in pairs, using needles less than 2 mm in diameter. The number of hairs that are transplanted will depend of the patient’s desired eyebrow size and density.
After Eyebrow Transplant Surgery
Following surgery, patients may wish to wear sunglasses. The face can be carefully washed within a couple of days. Mild pain medications and ice applications can be used to manage pain and swelling and antibiotics may be taken before and after eyebrow transplant surgery. Some patients choose to sleep with the area patched for added protection on the first night. Expected the formation of tiny crusts around the transplanted hairs, as this is part of the healing process.
It should be noted that it may be necessary to have a second procedure some months after the first has shown results, since on average only 80% of transplanted eyebrow hairs will survive.
