As we age, the effects of the sun, wind, time and hormones slowly become more apparent on our skin, mostly especially when the collagen beneath the skin wears away. Surface irregularities such as brown pigmented discolorations, age spots, general uneven tones, and wrinkles also occur.
There are two types of wrinkles that affect the skin — (1) static and (2) dynamic. Dynamic wrinkles are the lines that form from repetitive movement of facial muscles, such as those seen when we smile, squint or frown. Static wrinkles are the wrinkles that remain visible even when the face is relaxed. Examples of static wrinkles are the fine wrinkles seen around the corners of the eyes and the vertical lines above the lips.
What is Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment?
Today’s innovative laser technology allow clients to heal faster than ever. It stimulates the production of collagen, which results in a tightening and smoothing of the skin, as well as the improvement of any irregularities. In the earlier days, patients that underwent laser skin resurfacing would suffer angry red patches and longer periods of healing. However, nowadays, most people are able to return to their normal activities in about one week after this type of laser skin treatment.
How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?
Laser skin resurfacing surgery is performed by Oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Amiya Prasad, M.D. in his Joint Commission-certified operating suite with the use of local anesthesia. During this facial cosmetic treatment, damaged and blemished superficial layers of skin are removed, thereby restoring a softer glow to skin, and the growth of smoother and more youthful-looking skin. This procedure lessens or completely removes signs of aging — superficial wrinkles in particular. In addition to laser skin resurfacing, other treatment options include Microdermabrasion, fruit acid peels and chemical peels.
Makeup can usually be worn one week later. Additionally, it must be noted that the aesthetic techniques of a skilled surgeon who knows how to manipulate lasers effectively plays a role in the kind of results you will see. This artistic adaptation dramatically improves the texture and smoothness of the skin.
The MiXto SX Micro-Fractional CO2 Laser
Compared to the traditional CO2 laser, the MiXto SX Micro Fractional CO2 laser has significantly less down time. The traditional CO2 laser skin resurfacing removes the top layer (or resurfaces) 100% of the skin to being treated, which results in a longer healing time and causes redness of the skin that can last for up to three months.
The MiXto SX Micro Fractional CO2 laser means that only a fraction of the skin is treated. Because bridges of healthy skin are left in between the treated areas, the downtime is significantly less because the healing can occur at a much faster rate. It also has a much smaller spot size which allows for better control.
Micro Fractional CO2 laser does not mean fractional results. The science behind this technology allows for significant improvements comparable to traditional CO2 laser. MiXto SX Micro Fractional CO2 laser is a single treatment that delivers more dramatic results than typical lasers or procedures which require a series.
The Erbium Laser for Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment
The Erbium laser is Dr. Prasad’s preferred laser for skin resurfacing. This laser produces less heat and is considerably gentler on skin than other resurfacing lasers. Treatment with the Erbium laser stimulates the production of collagen which results in a tightening and smoothing of the skin.
Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing Recovery
Most people are able to return to their normal activities in about one week after laser skin resurfacing. During this period, topical ointments are applied to allow the skin to heal as soon as possible. Make-up can usually be worn one week later.
Does Laser Resurfacing Tighten Skin?
Lasers and other thermal devices can tighten and improve the skin in several ways. The heat of thermal devices can make the skin contract. So they can help improve issues like wrinkles. Thermal devices work on a controlled injury model, where heating the skin to specific temperature tricks the body to produce collagen as a repair response to injury. Collagen is the protein that gives skin its strength and foundation, and contributes to the appearance of youthful and smooth looking skin. With partial ablation, also known as fractionated laser treatment, the top layer of skin can be partially removed to allow for a new, fresh layer of epidermis to come in.
